Hex marks, also known as hex signs or barn stars, are traditional geometric designs painted on barns and other buildings in Pennsylvania Dutch country. These designs were believed to offer both protection for the building and its contents and to promote good luck and prosperity for the family living there. Some of the most common hex sign designs include six-pointed stars, rosettes, and sunlight circles. In recent years, the tradition of painting hex marks has spread beyond Pennsylvania Dutch country and become popular in other regions as a form of folk art.
